Invisible Drag, Visible Impact: Redesigning the Lifeline of the World

Most people never think about the air moving around a ship. But for Léon Grillet and Joë Sangar, that invisible force—aerodynamic drag—is one of the quiet reasons global shipping burns so much fuel. And when 90% of global trade moves by sea, small efficiency gains do not stay small for long. They cascade across supply chains, emissions totals, and the health of the ocean itself.

BlueNose was built on a clear belief: environmental compliance and operational profitability do not have to compete. They can reinforce each other. But the maritime industry is not an easy place for new solutions to land. With strict CII and EEXI standards creating a real compliance cliff, ship owners are under pressure. At the same time, high barriers to entry mean even strong technology can stall if it cannot earn trust at scale.

BlueNose developed an AI-powered aerodynamic retrofit designed to reduce fuel consumption by improving vessel efficiency. The question was how to move from a technically brilliant prototype to a commercially resilient offering that fleet managers and ship owners could adopt with confidence.

During the 2024 OHA Acceleration Cohort, BlueNose made that shift. OceanHub Africa supported their market entry by helping translate technical capability into a value proposition that speaks directly to the risks and priorities operators carry every day: compliance, reliability, return, and credibility.

Results

  • Global Mitigation Potential: If scaled across the current container ship fleet, BlueNose’s retrofit could help avoid ~11 million tonnes of CO2 per year (modelled potential).
  • Human-Scale Equivalent: Roughly 2.4 million cars off the road, or the annual sequestration impact of 523 million trees.
  • Community Health: Reductions in emissions contribute to cleaner air and health benefits for port and coastal communities affected by shipping plumes.
  • Funding Secured: $250,000 in grant funding received to date (portfolio reporting).
  • Commercial Readiness: Strengthened positioning and de-risking narrative to engage global ship owners and management players during the 8-month acceleration period.

This is what practical climate innovation can look like in shipping: not waiting for new fleets to be built, but upgrading the vessels already carrying the world’s trade, and proving that protecting the marine biosphere can align with operational performance.
