Coastal Community Development

Overview

With over 38% of Africa’s population living within 100 kilometers of the coast, our marine and freshwater ecosystems are more than just resources—they are lifelines.

Today, these waters employ nearly 50 million people, including 13.5 million small-scale fishers and aquaculture farmers who serve as the critical backbone of continental food security.
For the 400 million people who rely on fish as a primary protein source, subsistence fishers are the true architects of a resilient Blue Economy.

We recognize that systemic change starts at the shoreline; by providing accessible technology and tailored support to these vital communities, we ensure that Africa’s blue growth is both sustainable and inclusive.

Our Three Key Pillars of Hands-on Support

Capacity Building

Delivering tailored training and knowledge-sharing, co-designed with community members, focusing on entrepreneurship, sustainable harvesting, digital literacy, and climate adaptation.

Coaching & Mentoring

Providing hands-on, personalized support to entrepreneurs, cooperatives, and micro-enterprises through structured programs, business diagnostics, and ongoing advisory for market readiness.

Resource Funding Facilitation

Helping enterprises access the resources they need by assisting with grant applications, tailoring resource funds for equipment, and developing feasibility assessments and fundraising strategies.

Our Approach: Co-designing for an Inclusive Blue Economy

At OceanHub Africa, we recognize that community-led enterprises are not just beneficiaries—they are the backbone of our food systems and visionary entrepreneurs in their own right. Our Coastal Community Development vertical is built on a foundation of co-design to foster inclusive, regenerative growth within these vital coastal ecosystems.

We believe that systemic change is only possible when interventions are collaboratively developed with local enterprises and stakeholders. This participatory approach ensures our support is responsive, relevant, and rooted in the local context, leading to an effective and lasting impact.
