Healthy Seaweed

From Ocean Innovation Africa Stage to Pre-Seed Momentum: A Seaweed Venture Scaling Across Support, Connect, and Invest

When seaweed is treated as “low value,” the people who farm it, often women, stay stuck at the bottom of the value chain. Healthy Seaweed Co. set out to change that by proving something simple: seaweed can be a nutritious, locally loved product and a serious business.

Their turning point began on the Ocean Innovation Africa (OIA) stage, where the venture first gained visibility and momentum that carried forward into OceanHub Africa’s support pipeline. What followed is a clear “continuum” story: from ecosystem exposure to structured acceleration, to funding readiness, and now international validation.

OceanHub Africa backed Healthy Seaweed through the three verticals that help ocean ventures become bankable:

Results Across OHA’s 3 Verticals

  • SUPPORT (de-risking and capability building): Healthy Seaweed completed OceanHub Africa’s acceleration journey, sharpening the business for growth after early traction.
  • CONNECT (ecosystem and market access): The venture moved from local traction into broader market pathways, including export exploration and positioning in global conversations that matter for scale.
  • INVEST (capital readiness and follow-on momentum): Their pathway progressed from OHA acceleration into follow-on funding, including DOEN Foundation seed funding (2025) referenced in OHA’s ecosystem communications.

A Recent Milestone: Global Validation

Healthy Seaweed has now been accepted into Katapult Ocean, becoming the only African venture selected in that program cycle, a strong signal of global competitiveness and readiness to scale.

Healthy Seaweed’s story is what happens when a venture is not left to “figure it out” alone after the pitch stage. With the right support, the right connections, and the right capital pathway, a locally rooted seaweed business can move from promising to investable, while strengthening value creation in coastal communities.
