Turning Continental Ambition into Coordinated Action
Framework: UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021–2030)
Coordination: African Ocean Decade Taskforce & Decade Coordination Office for Africa
Ocean Impact Area: Science-to-policy alignment and regional stakeholder coordination
The UN Ocean Decade is a once-in-a-generation chance to align science, policy, and investment behind a single North Star: a healthier, more resilient ocean that supports livelihoods and inclusive growth. However, momentum does not scale on its own; it requires clear pathways for partners to plug in and trusted convenors to translate global frameworks into local action.
That is the role of the African Ocean Decade Taskforce. As a regional connector, the Taskforce identifies priorities and concrete actions for Africa and its Adjacent Island States. It works in tandem with the Decade Coordination Office for Africa to facilitate the co-design, implementation, and monitoring of Ocean Decade Actions by linking governments, research institutions, NGOs, and the private sector.
OceanHub Africa (OHA) fills the practical gap that often slows these large-scale initiatives: partnerships, visibility, and action pathways. By bringing ecosystem-building experience from the venture world to the policy table, OHA ensures that Decade priorities connect to investment-ready opportunities rather than remaining mere statements of intent.
Proof Points
- Strategic Alignment: The Taskforce held its inaugural in-person meeting in April 2023 (Nairobi), successfully identifying the immediate priorities for continental implementation.
- Systemic Coordination: Ongoing collaboration between the Taskforce and national committees to enable the monitoring of high-impact “Decade Actions” across the continent.
- Ecosystem Presence: OHA’s consistent role in building coordination layers, evidenced by the UNOC 2025 delegation hub, which explicitly coordinates with UN Ocean Decade actors to move from interest to delivery.
This work represents the steady construction of a functional collaboration layer for Africa. By strengthening narratives and structuring routes for partners, the Taskforce ensures that Africa’s ocean priorities are visible globally and actionable locally.
